Maximise your nutrition
Nutrition is essential to conception, so even if you have a healthy, balanced diet, invest in a good quality vitamin for you and your partner. I would always recommend taking a supplement with a comprehensive formulation; women should make sure that they take something that includes B vitamins and magnesium as well as folic acid, whilst men should ensure they are boosting the quality of their sperm with selenium and arginine.
Don’t forget your relationship
Although trying for a baby should be fun, if you’ve found yourself trying for longer than expected, it may start to take a toll on your relationship. Try to actively invest in your relationship, by taking the time to do the things you both enjoy and make sure you talk to each other about how you feel.
Balance is best
When trying to optimise your nutrition in preparation for a pregnancy, don’t be taken in by trendy diets. Whilst it’s always a good idea cut down on processed foods, don’t be tempted to cut out certain food groups or skip meals. Instead, opt for a balanced diet that is rich in nutrients, vitamins and minerals to help give you the best chances of a pregnancy.
Men matter too!
There are many misconceptions about male fertility, namely that men tend to think that they will be able to conceive forever. This is not the case! Much like women, after the age of 40, the quality of men’s sperm declines. Older men trying for a baby may experience a low sperm count, poor mobility, poor motility and damage to the DNA. It is important that men understand the importance of having good quality sperm for a healthy pregnancy.
